The battery is charged, the lights come on, perhaps the horn still works — but the screen stays black. That is a narrower fault than a bike showing no sign of life at all, and separating the two before you spend money is most of the job. If nothing responds anywhere, start with the power-chain checklist instead. This guide is for the bike that clearly has power somewhere, but no picture.
Before you unplug anything
Switch the bike off and take the battery out. Separating a live connector can arc and damage the controller's output stage. Put the battery back only when a step below asks for it.
Step 1: the checks that cost nothing
- Hold the power button longer. Many displays want three to five seconds of press, not a tap.
- Unplug and reseat the display connector. It lives at the head tube — the wettest, most tugged-on spot on the bike.
- Look inside the plug. Bent pins, or a green film on the brass, mean the joint is failing even when the halves click together.
- Reseat the main battery connector too. A display receiving no power looks identical whether the break is at its own plug or further upstream.
Step 2: measure before you buy
A display has no battery of its own. The controller feeds it, so the real question is whether power is arriving at the head tube at all.
On APT-style systems — the 750C and 850C manuals both document the same scheme — the display cable carries red for supply, blue for the switched line, and black for ground. With the battery fitted and the harness connected, a meter across supply and ground should sit near battery voltage. Read nothing there and the fault is upstream: a new display will not cure it.
Step 3: replacing, and in what order
- Display first. It is the cheapest of the three parts, and it carries the power button — a dead display keeps the whole bike from waking.
- Controller second, since the display's supply is generated by the controller.
- Display and controller as a matched pair when the two simply cannot talk to each other.
That third case is the one that catches people out. Communication faults — code 30 on KT and Bafang systems, 01 on APT, 10 and 11 on SW900 — describe the link between the parts rather than either part alone.
Picking the right replacement
Two things decide fitment: the model printed on the display, and the connector — pin count, gender, colour. Motor wattage does not enter into it, because the display only shows and commands. A 500W bike and a 750W bike can share one display.
Snapcycle's Eagle and Stinger, for instance, both run the 510S with a green 5-pin plug, so a part named after one model does not rule out the other. Read the model number, not the bike name.
A lit screen is not yet a working screen
Once the new display is on, stand the bike up, spin the rear wheel and watch for two things: a speed reading, and assist levels that actually change. A screen can illuminate on a protocol it does not really speak. Cross-brand pairings usually fail right here — SW900 units expect KT controllers, and S866 displays ship on more than one firmware, so two identical-looking parts still may not talk.
