To replace a worn freewheel you first have to get the old one off, and the right splined remover is the way to do it without damaging the hub. This Park Tool FR-1.3 is a 12-spline freewheel remover, listed for 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10-speed Shimano, SunRace, DNP Epoch and Sachs Aris freewheels and similar.

The tool engages the splines on the face of the freewheel, and its hex base takes a large wrench. Hold it in place with the axle nut or skewer while you turn it.

Check before you order: look at the face of your freewheel and count the splines. This tool is for freewheels with 12 splines. It is not for freewheels with a different number of splines or notches. The listing describes it as a metal tool in black.

Always remove the old freewheel with the chain off, and clean the hub threads before fitting the new one.
