The plug fits. The screen lights up. And yet the speed reads zero and the assist buttons do nothing. This is the most expensive misunderstanding in e-bike parts, and it comes down to one fact: a connector fitting is not the same as two devices being able to talk.
Protocols do not cross brands

Same model number does not guarantee the same protocol. Some S866 displays run a 5S protocol, others run No.2, and on certain units it can be switched with parameter P20. Same part number, different behaviour.
Which is why we sell them as pairs
A controller and display supplied as a factory-tested set has already been proven to communicate. Buying the pair moves the compatibility risk off you and onto the supplier. It is the single biggest thing you can do to avoid a return.
When you can safely buy a display on its own
When you can identify the exact model and connector on the display already fitted to your bike. Match on two things, and two things only:
The display model Read the markings on the face or the back label.
The connector Pin count, colour, and whether it is male or female. Photograph it straight on.
Motor wattage is irrelevant here. A display shows information and sends commands — it does not carry motor current. The same display works across 500 W and 750 W bikes. So if a product title mentions a model name that is not yours, that alone tells you nothing. Match the display model and the plug, not the bike name.
A worked example from our own service history: the same APT 510S display with a green 5-pin connector fits both the Snapcycle Eagle — including the 750 W 4-inch fat-tyre folding version — and the Stinger. Two very different bikes, one display.
