You bought a replacement display, the connector fit, the screen lit up — and nothing else works. No speed reading. Assist levels will not change. Or the bike throws a communication error a few seconds after power-on.
This is one of the most common disappointments in e-bike repair, and it is almost never a defective screen. It is a protocol mismatch.
Three layers of compatibility, not one
It helps to think of e-bike parts as three separate layers, each less interchangeable than the one above it.
Mechanical — axle width, axle diameter, bottom bracket, wheel size. Highly standardized. If the dimensions match, it bolts on.
Electrical — voltage, current, phase wires, hall wires. Partly interchangeable. Match the numbers, adapt the connector, and it will usually run.
Communication — the conversation between controller and display. This is the layer that breaks. Across brands it is essentially never interchangeable.
Riders assume that because the plug fits and the screen powers up, the job is done. The plug and the power are the first two layers. The third one stays invisible until you try to ride.
The protocol families
Displays speak in families, and a display only works with a controller from the same family.
KT — the Kunteng ecosystem, the most common one in the DIY world. Displays such as SW900, KT-LCD3, LCD8H and LCD5 belong here, and they pair with KT controllers. Worth knowing: SW900 runs a proprietary protocol, so wiring it to a VESC, Sabvoton or Votol controller will not work at all.
"No.2" UART — a general serial protocol adopted by many factories. S866, S900, UKC1 and M5 sit here. Units inside this family may talk to each other, but that is a "may", not a guarantee.
APT — its own system, including displays such as the 510S.
Brand-proprietary and CAN bus — Bosch, Shimano, Bafang CAN, and the later Rad Power platforms. These are encrypted or private. There is no aftermarket path in, and no adapter that changes that.
Three rules that surprise people
Same model number does not mean same protocol. The S866 is the classic example: different firmware builds run different protocols, and some units let you switch with parameter P20 in the display menu. Two screens with identical labels can behave differently on the same bike.
Same brand does not mean compatible. A controller and a display from the same factory can still fail to talk to each other when their firmware versions do not match.
No error message does not mean it is working. A connector that seats, a backlight that comes on, even a partial readout — none of that proves the data link is live. You may still find that speed never appears, that assist levels will not change, or that the parameter menu refuses to save.
What to do before you buy
The safest purchase is a matched set: controller, display and harness sold together and tested as a pair before shipping. That moves the protocol risk off your workbench and onto the supplier, which is where it belongs.
If you must replace the display alone, gather evidence before ordering. Photograph the model number printed on the back of your current display. Photograph the connector head-on, so the pin count and pin layout are both visible. Photograph the wire colours entering that connector. Add the controller model if you can reach its label. With those four things in hand, a parts seller can tell you whether a given screen has a realistic chance of working — and can tell you plainly when it does not. Without them, anyone who promises you compatibility is guessing.

When a display genuinely has failed, the usual replacement order is display first, then controller, then harness — the display is normally the cheapest of the three and a common point of failure. Screens like the 510S with the 5-pin green connector are sold against a specific connector and system for exactly this reason.
The short version
A display is not a universal part. It is one half of a matched pair, and it happens to be the half you can see. Buy the pair, or bring the photographs. Those are the two routes that end with a working bike, and everything else is a gamble with shipping costs attached.
