A Rad Power Bikes display that reads in km/h is almost never a broken display. On the models Rad documents with a color display, miles per hour and kilometers per hour are a menu setting, and the switch sits in a different place depending on which of the two color displays is on your handlebar.
First, work out which color display you have
Rad publishes two separate Help Center articles, one per display family, and the difference is where the buttons are.
- Advanced Color Display — buttons are on a remote next to the grip. Rad lists it on the Radster Road, Radster Trail, RadWagon 5, RadExpand 5 Plus and RadRunner Max.
- Integrated Color Display — buttons are built into the display. Rad lists it on the RadKick 7-Speed, RadKick Belt Drive, RadRunner (MY25), RadRunner Plus (MY25) and RadWagon (MY25).
Rad's own wording is that the two differ "in that the control buttons are on the remote" versus "integrated into the display." That one sentence tells you which steps below apply.
Advanced Color Display: Menu, then Units
Rad's instructions say to make the change with the bike stopped, using the remote:
- Press and hold the Menu button on the remote to enter the Menu screen.
- Press Up or Down to move through the options, then press Menu to open the setting.
- Choose Units. Rad describes it as switching "between displaying Kilometers per Hour (KM/H) or Miles per Hour (MPH) on the ride screen."
- When you are done, press and hold the Menu (M) button to leave the menu.
The same menu also holds Trip, Class, Range, Brightness and, on some models, Security and NFC card pairing. None of those change the unit you read.
Integrated Color Display: two paths, not one
RadKick 7-Speed and RadKick Belt Drive
- Press and hold the Menu button to enter the Main Menu.
- Use Up or Down, then Menu. The switch is listed under Basic Settings as Unit, described as switching "between displaying distance in miles or kilometers."
- When finished, press Up to move to Exit, then hold the Menu button.
Maintenance, Backlight, Autosleep, System Information and Reset sit in that same Basic Settings list. System Information is reference-only and cannot be edited.
RadRunner, RadRunner Plus (2025) and RadWagon (2025)
- Press and hold the Menu button on the bottom of the display — the button location is part of Rad's instructions for this group.
- Use Up or Down, then Menu.
- Choose Units, described exactly as on the remote version: KM/H or MPH on the ride screen.
- Hold the Menu (M) button to exit.
What the setting changes, and what it does not
Units is a ride-screen readout setting. Rad treats Class as a separate option for motor class, and Range, Brightness and the security items are separate too. Switching to mph will not change how the bike performs or how the class menu is configured; it only changes the number you are reading.
One caution from the same pages: if you enable security without changing the passcode it defaults to four zeros, and a forgotten passcode or lost key cards mean a service center visit, because Rad states it cannot unlock the bike remotely. That is reason enough to stay out of the security submenu while chasing a unit setting.
If the Units item is missing or will not stick
Rad documents the menu path and the exit gesture, and that is where the official material stops. We did not find an official Rad page covering a missing Units line, a setting that reverts after power-off, or a menu that will not open, so we will not invent a cause. Confirm the bike is stopped before you enter the menu, and hold the button long enough to register. If the display is behaving erratically rather than just reading the wrong unit, treat it as a connection problem first.
Our guide to connector-by-connector checks on a Rad that will not turn on covers the same harness and display plugs, and our e-bike repair online pages collect the free checks worth doing before you price a part. If the real question is which replacement display or cable fits, start from the part number on the label rather than the model name.
